Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information the Oya Learning Hub collects (very little), what external services it uses (a small number), and how it protects the people who use it — including children.

Effective: 17 June 2026

Who we are and what this covers

The Oya Learning Hub (learn.oyatees.org) is an educational website operated by Oya: Conservation for the Next Generation!, a non-profit organisation. This Privacy Policy applies solely to the Learning Hub and its associated pages. It does not cover the main OYA website (oyatees.org), OYA Portraits (portraits.oyatees.org), or any other OYA product or service.

The Learning Hub is designed for general audiences including children. We take the privacy and safety of all users — and young users in particular — very seriously.

Educational purpose statement. The Oya Learning Hub is provided purely for educational and informational purposes. No content on this site should be taken as professional scientific, medical, legal, or financial advice. Information about plant species, conservation status, and ecological data is sourced from established scientific bodies (including the IUCN Red List and Kew Gardens) and is correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of publication. Plant conservation data changes: always verify critical information with primary sources.

What information we collect — and what we do not

We do not collect personal data. The Oya Learning Hub does not require registration, login, or any form of account creation. We do not ask for names, email addresses, ages, or any other personal information from visitors.

We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising. No third-party advertising or analytics cookies are placed on your device by the Learning Hub itself.

We do not use analytics services (such as Google Analytics or similar) on the Learning Hub at this time. No data about your browsing behaviour is collected or stored by OYA.

Standard web server logs — including IP addresses and page request records — may be retained for a short period by our hosting provider (Netlify) for security and operational purposes. This is standard practice for all web servers and is governed by Netlify's own privacy policy, not ours.

External APIs and services used by this site

The Learning Hub uses a small number of external services to deliver its content. Each is described below, including what data is involved and how it is used.

Service Purpose Data involved Authentication
Wikipedia REST API
Wikimedia Foundation
Fetches thumbnail images of plant species directly from Wikipedia for display in the plant guide pages (e.g. the Swiss Alpine guide, Mediterranean guide, Ancient World guide). Images are loaded client-side in your browser when you open a guide page. No personal data is sent to Wikipedia. A standard browser request is made to retrieve a plant image by its Wikipedia article title. Wikipedia may log the request IP address in accordance with Wikimedia's privacy policy. No API key or authentication required. This is a public, free API. All images served are licensed under Creative Commons or equivalent open licences as per Wikimedia's media policies.
Google Fonts API
Google LLC
Loads the typefaces used throughout the Learning Hub (Playfair Display and Noto Sans) so pages look consistent for all visitors. When a Learning Hub page loads, your browser sends a request to Google's servers to download font files. Google may log this request, including your IP address, in accordance with Google's privacy policy. No font usage data is linked to individual users by OYA. No API key required. Google Fonts is a free public service.
Netlify (hosting)
Netlify, Inc.
The Learning Hub is hosted on Netlify, a web hosting platform. All pages and assets are served from Netlify's global content delivery network (CDN). Netlify may process access logs including IP addresses and request metadata for operational and security purposes. This is governed by Netlify's Privacy Policy (netlify.com/privacy). N/A — this is the hosting provider, not an external API call made by the site content.

No other external APIs, tracking pixels, social media embeds, or third-party scripts are used on the Learning Hub at this time. If this changes, this policy will be updated before the new service goes live.

Our commitment to younger users

Much of the Oya Learning Hub — particularly Plant School (Level 1) — is designed for children aged 7 and above. We are committed to protecting children's privacy online.

Because we do not collect any personal data from any user, children included, there is no risk of OYA storing, sharing, or misusing a child's personal information. No child is asked to submit any information to use this site.

Parents and guardians with concerns about any content on the Learning Hub are welcome to contact us at the address below.

Plant images displayed on the guide pages are retrieved from Wikimedia Commons via the Wikipedia REST API. These images are used under Creative Commons licences (typically CC BY-SA or CC BY). The specific licence for each image is visible on the corresponding Wikipedia article page.

Botanical illustrations on the Plant School page — the "Morphology of Flowering Plants" and "The Parts of the Flower" illustrations — are original artworks created by or for Oya: Conservation for the Next Generation! and remain the copyright of OYA. They are used on this site with permission.

Written content on all Learning Hub pages is original to OYA unless otherwise attributed. Factual information about species, conservation status, and ecological data is drawn from primary scientific sources including the IUCN Red List (iucnredlist.org), Kew Gardens (kew.org), and Plants of the World Online (powo.science.kew.org). Sources for each guide page are listed within the page itself.

Links to other websites

The Learning Hub contains links to external websites, including the IUCN Red List, Kew Gardens, and the main OYA website (oyatees.org). Once you leave the Learning Hub by clicking an external link, this Privacy Policy no longer applies. We encourage you to read the privacy policies of any external site you visit.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, if we add new features or external services to the Learning Hub. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated whenever a change is made. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
